Mechanical Ingenuity
- At age 21, Banneker constructed a fully functional wooden clock based solely on his observations of a borrowed pocket watch.
- His clock kept remarkably accurate time for decades—an engineering feat that attracted local attention and respect.
Astronomy & Almanacs
- Banneker taught himself astronomy and accurately predicted solar and lunar eclipses.
- He published a series of almanacs (1792–1797) containing:
- Astronomical data
- Tide tables and weather predictions
- Essays on science, society, and anti-slavery principles
- His almanacs were widely read across the mid-Atlantic and New England colonies.
Surveying Washington, D.C.
- In 1791, Banneker was appointed to assist Major Andrew Ellicott in surveying the federal district. Which would eventually become Washington, D.C.
- He helped reconstruct plans after the original architect, Pierre Charles L’Enfant, abruptly resigned, proving invaluable to the project.
Advocacy for Racial Equality
- In 1791, Banneker sent a letter to Thomas Jefferson, then Secretary of State, challenging him to reconsider his views on race and slavery.
- He included a copy of his almanac to demonstrate the intellectual capacity of African Americans.
- Jefferson acknowledged the letter and shared it with the French Academy of Sciences.

Though many of his personal papers were destroyed in a fire on the day of his funeral, Banneker’s legacy endures through:
- Schools, parks, and streets named in his honor
- Statues and historical markers across the U.S.
- A permanent exhibit at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture
