Announcing the Bad Elf GPS Pro!
Today we're proud to announce our new product, the Bad Elf GPS Pro, a next-generation GPS receiver and datalogger for the iPod touch, iPhone, and iPad.
The Bad Elf GPS Pro was designed specifically for pilots, boaters, and other outdoor enthusiasts based on feedback we've collected since we launched the original dock-connected Bad Elf GPS back in 2010. We didn't want to launch yet another generic external Bluetooth GPS receiver like those on the market today -- so we're not! Instead, we focused on packing a ton of great next-generation features into a small, rugged, and affordable package:
- Connect up to 5 devices at a time via Bluetooth
- Large LCD screen with backlight
- Extra-long battery life and 10Hz reporting rate
- Standalone GPS datalogger (100+ hours)
- Rugged and splash-proof to IPX4 standards
- Works with all location-based apps
The Bad Elf GPS Pro is available starting this week at the AirVenture/Oshkosh airshow.
Stop by our booth for a demo, and then visit one of these resellers to purchase a GPS Pro for yourself:
- MyGoFlight: Hangar B (booth 2080), Hangar D (booth 4108)
- Redbird Flight Simulation: Tents 208/219 (3rd tent from NW corner of Hangar D)
After the show we'll provide an update on when the GPS Pro will be available online and from our resellers worldwide.
Aviators: stay tuned for another announcement on Tuesday afternoon. If you're in Oshkosh this week, stop by our booth (Hangar B, booth 2125-2126) for a sneak peek!
Hi Jeremie,
You’re not the only one. We have non-iOS platform support planned for the near future, stay tuned. What apps/scenarios do you want to work?
Thanks,
Brett
I’m looking about buying the Pro model, and also would love it if it was compatible with my Sony Laptop too!
Hi Adam,
Good questions! The GPS Pro includes an internal LithIon battery, the same used for all cell phones on the market today. We don’t have hard lifespan test data yet, but we do use a very high quality battery. We’re expecting 2-3 years of normal usage (or 500+ charge/discharge cycles) before the reduced capacity is noticeable (< 80%).
We don’t have a formal battery replacement program, but plan to provide one in the future. I would expect this to be offered at a MUCH lower cost than a new unit, and not a profit driver for us. We want happy users for life!
We have a number of military users already, and like you we are expecting this to ramp up considerably in 2013. There are so many benefits to electronic chart products on the iPad and other tablet devices. We DO plan to add support for non-iOS devices soon, but haven’t announced a timeframe just yet. We should be able to nail that down soon, so keep an eye on our blog. The HW is ready, so it’s “just” a firmware update.
Hope that helps.
Best regards,
Brett
Before purchasing this product, I have read about the internal rechargeable battery not being able to be replaced and have a few questions that may also benefit other individuals.
Is there test data on the average battery life of the internal rechargeable battery? If and when the battery depletes, do I have to spend the full purchase price to buy a new unit?
Is there any development being pursued to have the ability to replace the battery with a new one in the future?
I am currently only flying in Army Aviation (UH-60 Blackhawks) and not yet in civil aviation, but I believe there is a huge audience within my community that would benefit from this product as I believe very shortly a transition may possibly be made to some sort of tablet use aside from paper charts. Will this product develop into a multi-system Bluetooth or remain within the apple community?
Thank you and I look forward to doing business in the future.
Just bought your pro model for my I pad mini : just can’t wait to test it !
