Caveats on Built-In GPS devices

  • The built in GPS relies on cell towers to help acquire and maintain a lock. If you are outside of cell-tower range, significant performance degradation have been observed and reported. This limitation of the built-in GPS has impact on aviation, marine, hiking and offroading activities.
  • The built in GPS is disabled when the iOS device is in airplane mode. Many people put their iOS device into airplane mode to save battery when they are not near cell towers. This keeps their device from searching for cell towers when none are available. Unfortunately, the built in GPS is also disabled in airplane mode.
  • The greatest possible accuracy from the built in GPS is 10 meters. This accuracy is simply not good enough for many activities.
