Configuring Collector for ArcGIS / ArcGIS Field Maps
for use with a Bad Elf Receiver

This article describes the process for configuring a Bad Elf receiver with Collector for ArcGIS or ArcGIS Field Maps. These instructions take you through a step-by-step process for connecting your Bad Elf receiver.

Bluetooth Pairing

The first step in the process is to ensure your phone or tablet is paired with the Bad Elf receiver. From your Bluetooth settings page either pair or confirm that your phone or tablet is paired with your specific Bad Elf receiver.

  • On your phone or tablet, go to the Settings function and select Bluetooth
  • Find your Bad Elf receiver by serial number
  • Tap the entry to pair
  • For the Bad Elf GPS Pro, GPS Pro+, and GNSS Surveyor, press the bottom button on the receiver
  • For the Bad Elf Flex, press the enter button (button with a circle) on the receiver
  • If prompted on your phone or tablet, click on Accept to complete the pairing process

Configuring Esri Collector for ArcGIS / ArcGIS Field Maps

The next step in the process is to configure your Bad Elf receiver to work directly with Collector for ArcGIS / ArcGIS Field Maps. You only need to complete this process once, unless you are using a different Bad Elf receiver.

  1. Start Collector for ArcGIS
  2. On the main screen of Collector for ArcGIS, look for an icon in the upper right that looks like a box with an arrow pointing out of the top (Classic) or an image of a person in top left (Collector). Click this icon.

  3. ArcGIS Collector Classic only - A dialog will appear at the bottom of the screen. Click on the option Settings.



  4. A settings screen appears similar to one shown below.

  5. Click on the option Provider.
  6. Collector for ArcGIS provides a list of connected GPS sources. The list shows configured receivers. If your Bad Elf receiver is not on the list, click on your receiver serial number under the option Add Receiver (Classic) or Add Provider.

  7. Enter a value for the option Antenna Height.



    For the Bad Elf GPS Pro, GPS Pro+, and GNSS Surveyor, enter 0 unless you are mounting the receiver on a pole.

    For the Bad Elf Flex, the ARP (antenna reference point) is 23cm above the base. If mounting on a 2 meter pole, enter 2.23m or 7.316ft.

  8. When you return to the GPS Receivers or Location Providers menu, it will now show the Bad Elf receiver. Ensure there is a check mark next to your Bad Elf receiver in the list. If not, click on your receiver in the list to activate it.

  9. You may now return to the main menu of Collector for ArcGIS and begin data collection. All location data delivered to Collector for ArcGIS comes from your Bad Elf receiver.

Note: When collecting data, Collector for ArcGIS alerts you to any loss of connection between your Bad Elf receiver and the phone or tablet.
